US Receives Chinese Warning on Last Week’s Intrusion into Sovereign Waters

After last weeks intrusion into Chinese sovereign waters, United States has been urged by Chinese defence minister to respect the country’s sovereignty and national interest under international law.

The concerns were forwarded by Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan to US Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Tuesday in Kuala Lumpur, where the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) defense chiefs are holding a meeting.Chang stressed that the US should not pursue any other dangerous actions that threaten China’s security interests.

Last well, the USS Lassen passed through a 12-mile limit around Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands archipelago. The reef is one of seven that China has artificially reinforced to support its administrative claim on the archipelago and the waters
around it.

Informed circles see the US highhanded action as a feeler to ascertain China’s capability of threat handling at both the diplomatic and military levels and whether the economic giant has systems in place for handling unexpected military situations.
