The flawed war on terror has given rise to extremism, says Hamid Karzai

hk-in-germaniy01GERMANY: Former president Hamid Karzai has once again faulted the ongoing war on terror, saying the flawed campaign has given rise to extremism in the region.

Speaking at the International School of Management (ISM) in Germany, he expressed his views on democracy in Afghanistan, peace talks with Taliban and the need for eradicating terrorist safe havens.

A statement from his office quoted Karzai as saying: “I’m opposed to ongoing flawed war on terrorism. I will continue to be averse to this campaign.”

The ex-president delivered his remarks during the academic discussion on the topic “Alliances for Democracy and Human Rights” at the private German university on Thursday.

He accused the US and its allies of paying no attention during the 15-year anti-terror war to destroying terrorist sanctuaries and training centres that were outside the border of Afghanistan.

In its current form, the war on terror was leading to the growth of extremism in the region, he believed, urging the US to include big powers like Russia, China and Iran in the alliance.

Karzai also commended Germany’s strong cooperation with Afghanistan in different field over the past 13 years. He said one of his key goals was that Afghanistan should once again become home to all Afghans with equal rights.
