The incident took place after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a government office in the district.
Local media quoting security officials reported that the suicide bomber managed to enter the excise office in Mardan and blew himself up which resulted in several casualties.
Reports also suggest that gunfires were heard from the compound following the explosion which was triggered by 8-10 kilograms of explosives.
This comes as at least 26 people were killed and 50 others were injured in a similar blast last year in a National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) office in the city.
No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident which comes as the homegrown Taliban group have been staging attacks on government institutions, officials and forces.
Nearly 400 people were killed or wounded following a suicide attack in Lahore city of Pakistan late in the month of March which was claimed by a splinter group of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. -KP
