The Pakistani officials are saying that Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has shared Islamabad’s concerns regarding the new US strategy and greater Indian role in Afghanistan during his meeting with the US Vice President.
Pakistan’s foreign secretary Tehmina Janjua has told local media reporters that Abbasi during the meeting expressed concern over the greater role the new policy advocated for India.
The foreign ministry of Pakistan in a statement said Both sides discussed issues relating to bilateral relationship as well as peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.”
The statement further added “Prime Minister shared Pakistan’s concerns and views with regard to the US strategy for South Asia.”
This comes as the Vice President of the United States Mike Pence earlier said he reiterated the belief of President Donald Trump during his meeting with the Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
He said he reiterated the belief of the President of the United States that Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our effort in the region.
Washington has intensified pressures on Pakistan regarding the presence of terrorist sanctuaries, specifically the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network which are using the Pakistani soil to plan and carry out attacks in Afghanistan.
Speaking during the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, President Trump said “It is time to expose and hold responsible those countries who support and finance terror groups like Al Qaida, Hezbollah, the Taliban and others that slaughter innocent people.”
“The United States and our allies are working together throughout the Middle East to crush the loser terrorists and stop the reemergence of safe havens they use to launch attacks on all of our people,” he added. -KP
