Daesh on the run in Afghanistan, claims President Ghani

President GhaniKABUL: President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said he had warned the world regarding the threat posed by Daesh, a an extremist group that had been defeated in Afghanistan.

Addressing participants the 52nd Munich Security Conference in Germany, the Afghan leaders accused the world of paying no attention to his warnings regarding the Islamic Sate (IS).

He said many of Afghanistan’s international allies had mistaken his caveats for an attention-grabbing move. However, he hoped the world would understand the warning and his government’s concern.

He alleged terrorists and militants were sneaking into Afghanistan from Russia, China, Central Asian republics and other countries.

Al-Qaeda had not been dismantled, the president said, adding the outfit had re-organised and posed a new threat along with Daesh, which was on the run in Afghanistan.

Pakistani Taliban, the Haqqani network and some other groups, whose activities were facilitated by underground economy, posed threats to his country, the president added.

The terrorist organisations were involved in human smuggling and drug trafficking, Ghani said, urging the world to support Afghanistan’s fight against the phenomenon.

World leaders and representatives of international organisations attended the conference to discuss important issues, particularly terrorism, migrant crisis, regional stability, the future of NATO and climate change. -Pajhwok
