KABUL: Pakistan’s army chief of staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said Pakistan cannot bring the Afghan war into Pakistan, apparently gesturing towards Kabul and Washington’s demands to eliminate the safe havens of Taliban and Haqqani network based in the country.
Gen. Bajwa made the remarks during a meeting with the Afghan army chief of staff General Sharif Yaftali.
“COAS while assuring fullest cooperation to Afghanistan said that Pakistan cannot bring Afghan war into Pakistan. COAS said that Pakistan has already cleared all its areas indiscriminately and has started unilateral border security measures including fencing,” according to a statement by the media wing of the Pakistani military.
Gen. Bajwa further added “Besides border security management other key factor for enduring peace is dignified repatriation of Afghan Refugees.”
“COAS reassured Afghan side that Pakistan is open to any suggestion that facilitate peace in Afghanistan. In this spirit, he offered to form a Pak-Afg Army working group to jointly work and formulate security recommendations for government level discussion aimed at addressing mutual concerns. Afghan CGS agreed to the proposal and thanked COAS for his relentless efforts towards peace,” the statement added.
This comes as the Afghan officials have long insisting that the leadership councils of the Taliban and the notorious Haqqani terrorist network are based in the key cities of Pakistan from where they plan and launch attacks in Afghanistan. -KP
