KABUL: The Afghan defense officials handed over Ali Haidar Ali Gilani to the Pakistani authorities a day after he was rescued during a joint operation of the Afghan and US special forces.
Ali Haidar was handed over during a ceremony in the Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan attended by top Afghan defense officials and the Pakistani Ambassador to Afghanistan.
He left the Ministry of Defense compound for airport where he will be picked by an airplane of the Pakistan Air Force.
Ali Haidar is the son of the former Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. He was kidnapped by gunmen during an attack in Farrkhabad, near the Matital Road in Multan, in May 2013.
His two associates were killed during the kidnapping which took place on 9th May as he was contesting for the general election from PPP-200 constituency in Multan., according to the reports.
He was rescued during a joint raid conducted by the US Special Operations Forces and Afghan commandos.
“Ali Haider Gilani, son of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was rescued today in Giyan District of Paktika Province Afghanistan by U.S. Special Operations Forces and Afghan Commandos in a partnered raid,” a statement by USFOR-A said.
The statement further added “Under Operation Freedom’s Sentinel authority, the counterterror mission was planned and launched after evidence of terrorist activity was confirmed.”
According to USFOR-A, at least enemy combatants were killed as a result of the operation and there were no other injuries or damage was observed or reported. -KP
