“Access to Justice for Underprivileged Women Seeking Justice Information and Resources” Project launched in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Blue Veins a Peshawar based organization has initiated a project “Strengthening District Bar Associations and setting up Facilitation Kiosks in District Court”, Peshawar in collaboration with District Bar Association under Gender Equity Program (GEP) of Aurat Foundation supported by USAID.  The project will help to sensitize the lawyers in gender legal practices and consolidate pro-women judicial precedents and regressive court precedents for comparative trend analysis. The project will also encourage lawyers to take pro-bono cases and consolidate a database of legal experts. The initiative will also facilitate information dissemination through establishing facilitation kiosk for women seeking legal assistance in the District Court Peshawar.

During the program the president of the district Bar Association Peshawar Ismail Khalil while speaking on the occasion said “Strengthened bar association with better resources and enhanced capacity on gender friendly court/legal procedures will increase access to justice for underprivileged women seeking justice and enabling women to access information, resources, and justice.

Taimur Kamal Coordinator of Pakhtunkhwa Civil Society networks while sharing his views said “Access to justice for women in Pakistan is set in complex web of historic and cultural dynamics which continues to influence present day attempts to rectify follies of the past. Laws are a major tool in promoting and protecting women’s rights and they play a vital role in the well-being of a society”

Mr. Qamar Naseem of Blue Veins in his closing remarks said “Challenges faced by the women of Pakistan in accessing the criminal justice sector and justice itself are immense. We hope that this initiative will create viable pro bono service at District Peshawar level and will be model for other districts”.

The event was well attended by lawyers, media representatives, Govt officials and Civil Society organizations. A joint Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Blue Veins and District Bar Association President by the end of ceremony.
