ASTANA: Former President Hamid Karzai said on Thursday Western sanctions against Russia would not yield the desired results.
Addressing the 13th Eurasian Media Forum (EAMF) in Astana, Karzai said: “The sanctions imposed on Russia by the West are wrong. They will not be successful.”
The EAMF has traditionally been a platform to discuss international events, with this year’s gathering focused on the meaningfulness and maximum efficiency of discussions.
The forum appealed for what the global community, Europe, Russia and the West should do in order to achieve harmony, according to organisors.
Besides Karzai, more than 400 delegates from over 50 countries will have a chance to speak. British economist Simon Anholt, former Greek minister of tourism Olga Kefaloyanni and Russian political scientist MaksimSuchkov discussed the global financial crisis.
According to TASS news agency, Karzai spoke on the geopolitical consequences of the transformation process in the Middle East.
Jack Straw, UK’s ex-foreign secretary, believed the sanctions were justified. However, he hoped relations between Russia and the West would improve. -Pajhwok
