Taliban destroy 300 schools across Afghanistan

education1-615x3002xKABUL: Taliban insurgents have destroyed some 300 schools in the past two months as they wage war on education, local officials said on Monday.

The latest attack was three days ago when Taliban burst into a girls’ school in northern Jawzjan province at night, beating up security guards and burning down the school, which has about 500 students.

“The Taliban insurgents entered the school at around 10pm, beat the guards and set chairs, books and classes ablaze,” the provincial governor’s spokesman Reza Ghafoori said reporter.

“They (Taliban) also warned that the girls should not be allowed in the school again.”

“The Taliban burned schools in this area in the past three days,” said provincial deputy police chief Abdul Hafiz Khashesh.

The Taliban opposed education for girls when they ruled from 1996 to 2001. After they were toppled by an allied invasion, millions of girls began attending schools across the country. But schools, students and teachers have increasingly been coming under Taliban attacks in recent years.
