Sartaj Aziz says US is a ‘selfish friend’

Sartaj-Aziz-2ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz has said the United States is a ‘selfish friend’, claiming that the country is favoring Pakistan whenever its self-interest matters.

Aziz made the remarks as he was speaking at a press conference at the Foreign Office of Pakistan on Thursday, according to the local media reports.

He also touched on the issue of peace process in Afghanistan and said if the US could not bring peace in war-torn Afghanistan, why it was expecting Pakistan to do this difficult job within the shortest-possible time.

Terming the May 21 drone strike that targeted Mullah Akhtar Mansoor in Balochistan as unfortunate, Aziz said raid has not only violated the country’s sovereignty but also damaged the level of trust with the United States.

Aziz also added that the death of Mullah Mansoor has undermined the Afghan peace process, warning that the incident would far reaching implications.

According to Aziz, Pakistan was unsure of the US objective behind the strike but added that the raid had more negatives aspects than positives.

The remark by Aziz comes as the Afghan officials have long been pessimistic regarding Pakistan’s sincerity to take steps to help Afghan peace process.

The Afghan officials criticize Pakistan for sheltering the Afghan militant groups who are using the Pakistani soil as safe havens to plan and coordinate attacks in Afghanistan.

The Afghan government welcomed the airstrike that targeted Mullah Mansoor and said he was a notorious leader who was opposing peace talks and pursuing violence against the Afghan nation. -KP
