KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said the new strategy by the United States for the South Asia is yet another opportunity for Pakistan to review its old regional approach, specifically the country’s approach towards Afghanistan.
The Afghan President made the remarks during his speech to the nation after the announcement of the strategy by President Donald Trump.
He said an unstable Afghanistan is not in anyone’s favor, particularly Pakistan, emphasizing that Islamabad should reconsider its previous approach, taking advantage of the available opportunity.
President Ghani further added that the ongoing violence in Afghanistan has regional roots as well as roots to the international violence.
The US President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled the new US strategy for Afghanistan and the South Asia region, emphasizing on continued efforts to eradicate terrorism and fight against menace of terror threatening the region and the world.
President Trump said “For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror. The threat is worse because Pakistan and India are two nuclear-armed states whose tense relations threaten to spiral into conflict. And that could happen.”
He said the next pillar of the new strategy is to change the approach and how to deal with Pakistan, emphasizing that we can no longer be silent about Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organizations, the Taliban, and other groups that pose a threat to the region and beyond, emphasizing that Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our effort in Afghanistan. It has much to lose by continuing to harbor criminals and terrorists. -KP
