Karzai condemns drone strikes in Paktika, claiming civilians were killed

Karzai (1)The former Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned a drone strike in eastern Paktika province of Afghanistan, claiming that civilians were killed in the raid.

According to a statement released by the Office of the Former President, the drone strike by US forces in Barmal district left a number of civilians dead.

The statement further added that the former President strongly condemns the strike by US forces, calling the raid as irresponsible.

Karzai warned that such airstrikes will have negative consequences as the civilian deaths will spark furor among Afghans against the foreign forces.

According to the local officials, at least 17 people were killed in two separate airstrikes targeting the Taliban militants.

However, the provincial council officials said the victims also included ordinary civilians who lost their lives in the airstrikes.

Paktika is among the relatively volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are actively operating in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities. -KP
