AFGHANISTAN: The government of India has increased formalities for the issuance of visas for the Afghan nationals amid concerns that the Afghan passports have been seen in possession of some of the citizens of neighboring countries of Afghanistan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahuddin Rabbani told lawmakers in the Upper House of the Parliament, Meshrano Jirga, the issue has became a concern for the Indian Embassy in Kabul.
Rabbani was summoned by Meshrano Jirga lawmakers to brief regarding the issue of India visa for the Afghan citizens.
Without elaborating further on which countries’ citizens have obtained the Afghan passport, Rabbani said the Afghan citizens must provide a bank statement and medical documents in order to obtain a visa.
This comes as the Afghan citizens started to face a similar issue from the UAE authorities last year.
The issue with UAE reportedly emerged with the issuance of the new electronic Afghan passports amid concerns that the citizens of the other countries misused the Afghan passports.
However, the issue was later resolved as an agreement was reached between the two countries to improve the information quality of the newly issued e-passports.
The UAE officials agreed to grant visas for the Afghan citizens once the Central Passport Department inserts the ‘Father Name’ of the passport holder in the electronic passports, even accepting the handwriting on the passports. -KP
