Australia’s Governor-general Peter Cosgrove reaffirmed continued support to Afghanistan during a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday.
Cosgrove arrived to Afghanistan to meet with the Afghan officials days after an Australian aid worker was abducted by gunmen from eastern Jalalabad city.
The Office of the President said President Ghani and the Australian Governor-general discussed issues of bilateral interest, focusing on different sectors.
Noting the international coalition forces support to Afghanistan, Cosgrove said the Afghan forces became capable to take over the security responsibilities as result of the international support.
Cosgrove further added that Australia remains committed support Afghanistan and help in economic development of Afghanistan.
He also hailed the Afghan cricket team for their recent victories in ICC World Twenty20 and congratulated President Ghani and the Afghan nation.
In his turn President Ghani thanked the Australian forces for their activitie and devotion while they were serving in Uruzgan province.
President Ghani also thanked the Australian forces for training the Afghan National Security Forces.
He also thanked the Australian Governor-general for extending an invitation for a trip to Australia and promised to visit the country during an appropriate time in the future. -KP
